For our first travel adventure of the year, Matt and I visited Zurich, Switzerland. We flew from Las Vegas to New York with a long layover before boarding the plane to Zurich, which left plenty of time to eat at Shake Shack. After landing in Zurich we took a very short ten minute train ride to the Hauptbahnhof (Main Train Station). Unfortunately there was a slight drizzle which meant we were slightly wet when we arrived at our hotel. We could not check in yet, so we stored our bags at the desk and walked to the tram. Zurich has an excellent public transportation system. We bought day passes and boarded the tram in the direction of the Kunsthaus Museum.
The Kunsthaus Museum was such a surprise. There are works by Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh, and even Andy Warhol. We visited for free since it was a Wednesday and we were also provided with free audio guides, which is a huge bonus since Zurich is expensive.
After the museum we visited Altstadt or Old Town.
We had a doner kebab for lunch. Then we walked along the Limmat River and down Bahnhofstrasse (Train Station Street), where we visited Sprungli, a popular chocolate store in Switzerland. We bought Luxemburgerli which are similar to French macarons. I could eat them all day.
We also visited the Grossmunster, which was completed in 1220 and rumored to be founded by Charlemagne. The stained glass inside was amazing and naturally no pictures were allowed.
We paid to climb the stairs of one of the towers to view the setting sun over Zurich.
After visiting Grossmunster, we stopped by Coop, one of our favorite grocery stores in Europe. We bought dinner and breakfast for the next day. Then took the tram back to our hotel.
