Adventure #112

On our last day in Lisbon Matt and I rode the metro and then the tram to the Monument to the Discoveries, which was built in 1960 to commemorate the people involved in Portugal's age of discovery. The monument is on the Tagus River and we had a good view of the 25th of April bridge and the Cristo Rei statue.

After the monument, we walked to the Torre de Belem, which was finished in 1521 and used as a fortress. We were able to explore the inside of the tower, which was used as a prison and to store weapons.

Then we visited the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, which is an amazing monastery. The cloister was beautiful and the tomb of Vasco da Gama is located inside, he sailed around the Cape of Good Hope and opened the trade route to India.

We took the tram back to the Baixa area and had our usual felafel and kebab for lunch. We did some shopping and then returned to our hotel to pack for the journey home.
