Adventure #142

Alright time for our second day in Bangkok. We buy some breakfast from a little bakery by our hotel and walk across the river to the air train. From the air train we take the metro and from the metro we go to the train station. Our train tickets are dirt cheap. However, our train must be friends with our dinosaur plane. The poor train is old and run down. There is no air conditioning, just ceiling fans and open windows. And it is hot. Humid hot. We are always wet hot. Sweat running down our faces hot. Anyway, the train slowly rolls down the tracks which creates a slight breeze and we have seats which I am grateful for since the aisles are full of people standing. The train tracks must go through the poor areas since most of the houses are made from sheet metal. However, every house has a cable dish on the roof. Not sure what to make of that.
We finally arrive in the town of Ayutthaya. We take a small boat across the river and walk through town. We eat lunch across the street from the ruins. I try the sweet and sour chicken. Matt gets coconut soup and a Thai tea. The best part about my meal is the cold lemonade.
After lunch we visit the ruins of Ayutthaya. The first is Wat Mahathat. It was the largest and most important Wat built in the 14th century. Matt and I explore its ruins.
The next Wat we visit is called Wat Ratchaburana.
While looking at the Wats we notice that people are taking elephant rides. We decide to check it out. It is super cheap. So we buy tickets and ride on an elephant. It is similar to riding a horse, except much higher off the ground.
After our ride we walk through town and take the train back to Bangkok. We stop for dinner at a little place by our hotel. It is super good. Matt has cashew chicken and chicken satay. I try garlic and pepper pork. Then we return to our hotel for a much deserved shower. Remember we have been sweating all day.
