Adventure #11

On Saturday I picked Matt up from school after his two week camping trip. I was very ready to have him back home. He will never leave me again for that long. He had an excellent adventure doing field research and bird watching. Of course he is a boy and only took a few pictures during the entire trip. He started by camping for two nights in Zion. He had some free time and was able to hike Angel's Landing with two guys in his class. So jealous.

Then, the van caravan drove straight to Tucson. Long drive. For a week they sleep on mattresses in an old barracks building just outside of the city. Matt could see the Mexican border from where they were staying. They did most of their work here. They got up early every morning and logged all the birds they saw for three hours. Then, they did the same thing in the afternoon. They wrote journals and papers everyday. Sounds like fun, huh? Oh, I forgot to mention that it was at least 100 degrees each day.

After Tucson, they drove to Flagstaff and spent the night in a Hostel. The next day they drove to Jacob Lake and camped overnight. Matt was excited since he was able to see the south rim of the Grand Canyon for the first time.

Matt and one another guy volunteered to drive from the Grand Canyon all the way home in the van dubbed Sweaty Bertha, thus named for no air conditioning. Thankfully while the group was in Tucson there were showers and a washing machine. So when Matt returned home he did not smell too bad. However, he did not bring his razor to shave his face with, so he had a full beard when he arrived home. He has never let his facial hair grow out that much. So I really am married to a scruffy polar bear.
