Adventure #124

On our next day in Italy Matt and I explored Florence. We started the day by visiting Piazzale Michelangelo, a hill on the other side of the river that offers great views of Florence.




Next we walked to Palazzo Pitti, which is a palace/house built in 1457. We bought tickets to look through the rooms and art collection.



After, we walked across Ponte Vecchio, the oldest bridge in the city, built in 1345. Ponte Vecchio was the only bridge in Florence to survive World War II and contains dozens of jewelry stores.






Matt and I walked to Piazza della Signoria, which is a large square that has been the social and political center of Florence for many years. The piazza contains Palazzo Vecchio, which is the town hall completed in 1322. The bell in the tower used to call the citizens of Florence to public meetings and warn of fires and floods. The piazza also has many statues that commemorate historical events.





Next we went to the church called Santa Croce. Work on the church began in 1294 and contains many tombs and monuments to famous individuals including; Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, and Dante. Those names ring any bells?
