Adventure #90

Guten tag meine freundin. Wie Gehts? (Hopefully I spelled that right. It has been a long time since Ms. Titze's 9th Grade German class.) Matt and I have returned from Germany. So I am just going to start right in on our adventure. We took the 07:00 flight from Salt Lake to Atlanta. This is the first time we have not had to take the red eye. We were very excited to say the least. We had a short layover and boarded the plane to Munich. After landing, we took the train to the Hauptbahnhof or central train station. Per usual, we got slightly lost finding our hotel, but quickly oriented ourselves. Our hotel let us check in early, so we changed and set out to explore Munich. We started by visiting Karlstor, the medieval gate that stands at the western entrance to the old town. We walked down Neuhauser and Kaufinger Street, which are busy pedestrian shopping streets that lead to the main square in Munich called Marienplatz.





Marienplatz or St. Mary's Square was named after the people of Munich asked the Virgin Mary to protect them from the cholera epidemic in 1854. The square contains the Altes Rathaus or Old Town Hall built in 1464 and the Neues Rathaus or New Town Hall, which contains the famous Glockenspiel. At specific times in the day the clock plays music and mechanical characters dance, while knights joust. Matt and I were just in time for the clock to go off.





After Marienplatz Matt and I visited several churches including: the Frauenkirche or Church of our Lady, Peterskirche, Michaelskirche, and Asamkirche.




Matt and I paid to climb the steps of Peterskirche to see some views of the city.





After, Matt and I visited the Viktualienmarkt. We ate dinner on crowded benches in the middle of the market. Matt had bratwurst and I had schnitzel. I am pretty sure we were the only ones without beer. Nothing like an ice cold mug of Sprite at the end of the day.
