Adventure #90

On day two in Munich Matt and I woke up early to take the train to the town of Dachau. The ride was short so we arrived before the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site opened. We decided to take the Walk of Remembrance through the town, which is basically signs with historical information about the concentration camp.


It is free to visit the memorial site, however Matt and I paid for audio guides. There was a large amount of information about the history of Dachau. I will try to keep it to a minimum.


This first picture is of the old platform and railroad where the prisoners were brought to Dachau. It was covered by a hill, however people wanted it uncovered, so that the buildings where the guards lived and trained are now visible.




This building is the gate house, which was restored to look exactly like it did in the 1930s-1940s. The prisoners were brought through the infamous gate that reads, "Arbeit Macht Frei" or Work Makes Free.


This large open area is where the prisoners gathered everyday for role call.


This large building is where the prisoners would work all day. It now houses the museum, which contains a thorough timeline of the history of Dachau. Matt and I also watched the short film in English about the concentration camp.


This is a picture of the foundations of the barracks, all have been torn down, except the first two.



This building is the crematorium and contains the gas chamber. During World War II, the crematorium ran all night and day, however, the gas chamber was never used.
